Expandable Rims?
It's a good excuse as any for BYU's Loss to Texas Tech
How wide is a Basketball Rim?
Basketball rims have an inner clear diameter of 18” | 45.72 cm.
What is the size of a basketball compared to the rim?
Compared to the clear area of the basketball rim, a regulation basketball is 27% of the size of the opening.
Above are the actual physical facts concerning a basketball rim.
A rim pertaining to those exact specifications was supposedly used in Lubbock, Texas Saturday night when BYU was defeated by Texas Tech.
According to team rankings before the game, BYU was ranked as a better team than Texas Tech.
So how does a supposed better team lose to a supposedly inferior team? And no, you can’t use poor officiating as an excuse. There has to be a better answer.
Texas Tech made more baskets than BYU. Below is the proof.
TT’s shooting stats
BYU’s shooting stats
Okay, empirically Texas Tech shot the ball better than BYU. But as die-hard Cougar fans we have been told that BYU is more talented than T-Tech. Consequently, we need a good excuse to continue to justify how Texas Tech beat us.
ADJUSTABLE RIMS!
Below are the parameters for a basketball rim.
We know that Tech is a Technical College. We know they have big time oil/booster money.
Would it be out of the question to imagine that they have invented an expandable basketball rim? Just an extra inch expansion would not be noticeable but would likely increase shooting percentages by at least 2/3 percent with talented college shooters.
My theory is that they expand the rim when Texas Tech is shooting at it and return it to its normal size when BYU shoots at it.
That’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it. I’ve used poor officiating for far too long.
I do however watch a lot of tv shows where high (Texas?) tech shenanigans can make a show very interesting.
That’s my excuse for the loss in Lubbock and am sticking to it until I find a better excuse for the at least 3 more losses on the road that BYU basketball will experience this conference season.
If my IQ and wallet were higher, I think I could come up with some good ideas for robotic referees, and it would help basketball at all levels...at least until we began discussing and dissing the guys that programmed the referee robots.
One final thought. If the basketball rims were 9 inches bigger, me and Uncle Rico could have both been stars.
